Africa's 100 Best Books of the 20th Century Awards to be presented in Cape Town

The Zimbabwe International Book Fair Africa 100 Best Books of the 20th Century awards presentation will take place in Cape Town on 27 July. To compliment this African achievement, ZIBF's Indaba 2002 will be held on 26 and 27 July. An exhibition will run concurrently with the conference from 26 to 28 July at the venue of the conference, with the last day being traders day.

The Africa's 100 Best Books Project which was born in Harare, launched in Abuja, London and Frankfurt was announced in Accra on 19 February. The celebrations to be attended by hundreds of Africa's best writers and their publishers will go a long way towards further consolidating the spirit of the African Union and the Africa Renaissance.

"The choice of Cape Town as the venue for the Awards Presentation Gala demonstrates the Pan-Africanism of the project. The project is a public relations exercise for Africa's book industry and hence the need for maximum publicity and South Africa has diverse media houses," the ZIBF Executive Director, Moses Samkange, said.

"The event has been strategically timed to allow publishers attending the awards gala to take part in the ZIBF2002. ZIBF will offer attractive incentives to publishers wanting to proceed to ZIBF thereafter. ZIBF2002 will be held in Harare from 28 July to 3 August."

Also expected to attend is the patron of the Africa's 100 Best Books of the 20th Century patron, Archbishop Desmond Tutu and the project's jury led by Professor Njabulo Ndebele. The actual venue for the event is yet to be decided.
